Required CPT Coding for Post-Operative Global Surgeries
As of July 1, 2017 practitioners in certain states were required to include CPT code 99024 on post-operative claims for services provided during the global period for specific procedures. If you are a provider in Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nevada, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, or Rhode Island you should have a good month of experience reporting this code on your claims data. CMS highly encourages all providers to take advantage of using this code for post-operative claims for global surgical procedures. The ruling gives a list of roughly 300 HCPCS codes for which providers must report CPT code 99024. With this requirement, CMS will continue analyzing these post-surgical claims. Providers in the states listed above who do not include this code may experience higher volumes of rejections, denials, and potentially decreased or delayed reimbursement. You can find a listing of the post-surgical HCPCS codes for which CPT 99024 is required by following this link. Please note that while this is required for providers in practices with 10 or more physicians, it is recommended that all physicians start making this a habit.
